Centrally located, we have fabulous access to the rest of the capital, but with a real village feel: not only is it heaving with life and bustle, from oodles of amazing shopping, we also get wonderful tranquility right on the doorstep. Even better is Kings Cross just down the road to whisk us away when we need a bit of a countryside-break. For cleaning Holborn and other areas in London, there are many services.
There’s so much to enjoy, there is little temptation to hand around the house, cleaning. Yuck. Like, this weekend I’d sort of planned to clean through the clothes, you know, clean out the summer stuff to make room for the winter clothes that I’ll shop for next week over in South Kensington. But I’m joining my sister for a look around the British Museum before we go to the interactive poetry writing workshop led by Inua Ellams, an award-winning poet. Tell me cleaning out the wardrobe can beat that.
And this happens all the time. I plan to do some housework, then something more interesting pops up instead, so I decided to get a domestic cleaner. She comes in once a week to give the place the once over, then once a month she stays longer to do one of the bigger jobs like cleaning the oven or polishing the floors. No wonder that carpet cleaners in London never stumble upon scarcity of calls; many other people are in the similar shape.
This afternoon I’m off to a WC1 Chinese Brush Painting workshop with the kids, which we’re all looking forward to, and no doubt we’ll be throwing paint all over the place when we get back as we practice doing it ourselves. Thankfully the cleaner has set up a ‘stain kit’ for me, so if we manage to spill anything on the carpet, I can stick a plaster on it till she gets here next week to sort it out properly
While I enjoy cleaning—I find it quite cathartic at times—it’s nice to know I don’t have to do it. Taking that urgency and chore-feeling out of cleaning, I find that I actually end up doing more of those things that get left because the chores get in the way. So, although I’d hoped to sort my wardrobe out before shopping on Tuesday, as I know I don’t have to tidy the living room before Mother-in-law gets here, I’ll simply do it later in the week.
